This project creates modern pathology research laboratories with related support spaces on two floors of an early twentieth century academic building. The former laboratories had antiquated mechanical systems and lighting, and the work areas felt cramped. The architects used refined solutions to meet the client’s rigorous standards for a 21st century research facility without altering the building’s envelope or window openings. The result is neither a generic modern laboratory nor a typical infill project. Rather, it is an efficient and aesthetically pleasing workspace that successfully marries modern technology and historic design.
