Birdhouse
 |
Both functional and whimsical, this birdhouse was designed and
constructed for a fund-raising auction. The materials are mahogany, birds-eye maple,
brass, and aluminum with a natural oak branch perch. The roof form, derived from a
childhood memory of the movie Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, is
constructed with corrugated aluminum to capture and channel water to the back of the
birdhouse where it will fall to a birdbath below. The support post is made from a
fragment of an aluminum spar (sailboat mast), and the base is varnished mahogany.
Walker Burns produced the metalwork. T.J. Carr (a cabinetmaker from
Chester, Connecticut) fabricated the woodwork. The birdhouse is in a private
collection in Connecticut. |
